Another magical day happened Friday when Princess Sirindhorn made a surprise visit to see and hear more about the Thai Reach project at the Hospital she founded.

Tui’s Day

Local dignitaries from the Ban Haad Sub-district, south of Khon Kaen met with the staff at Sirindhorn Hospital today to see the progress of the Thai Reach project, learn about 3D printing and meet Mr Cunmunt and his 3D printed hand. Mr. Cumnunt was the star, showing off how much progress he's made in the past two weeks wearing his hand. Mr. Cumnunt's dedication to mastering it has impressed everyone. After much insisting, we finally let him take it home for the first time. The dignitaries, that included a teacher, a military officer and government workers all came away impressed with what we have done so far and will spread the word and help with fundraising.

A tour of the Veterans Hospital, Thailand
A couple of years ago when we were first pitching our Thai Reach project and looking for partners, Yui and I toured the Prosthetic and Orthotic facilities of Thailand's Veterans Hospital in Bangkok. We saw an exhibit showing the history of prosthetic design and we visited the workshops to see the then current process of making prothetics. I am always struck by the craftsmanship of molding and sculpting what will be a very personal object to someone. The doctors and staff we met were all quite blown away by our presentation showing what 3D printing can do, the Robohand, Project Daniel and E-nable, ect and were very eager to try something new. They also showed us a physical therapy ward where we met veterans making traditional Thai art, carvings and paintings. I left there with a different understanding of what it takes to make a prosthetic - it's not just science and engineering, it can be an art form as well as a means to create art. I knew that our project going forward would need to keep this in mind, never getting lost in the technology, always thinking of the creative potential of the people wearing what we create for them.
Printing an Unlimbited Arm for Tui
Ball Amornthep is printing an Unlimbited Arm for Tui. The Unlimbited Arm is designed with parts that are flat and then shaped with a jig after immersing in boiled water.
Measuring an Unlimbited Arm for Tui
After the success of Mr Jitt and Mr Comnunt, the staff at Sirindhorn hospital were inspired to help Tui out, who is missing a left hand and partial arm. The ideal design for him is the Unlimbited Arm. The staff measured his arms and made a mock up of the new arm using an adult Phoenix hand and a Thermoplastic cuff. Mr Comnunt gets a hand.
Mr Comnunt's physical therapist, Khun Kung of Sirindhorn Hospital had him training his wrists for the past two weeks in training for wearing the 3D printed Phoenix V2 hands. She told him to cut back a little since he was starting to develop wrist pain, he was training so hard. But it paid off as he had no problem picking up things on his first attempt.
Mr Jitt tests the 3D printed hand
The very first test went about as good as can be expected, the fit wasn't perfect, but the staff at Sirindhorn Hospital made some changes to the palm support and soon Mr. Jitt was picking things up. As expected he will need more time to train his wrists to the movement. Still, it's almost magical to see this work for the first time on someone we weren't so sure could use this design. Great work from Khun Goong the physical therapist and Khun Whoot, Mana, Boon Mee and the rest of the staff at Sirindhorn. A good first test that will lead us to improving it and inspiring more to help what we are doing. Nice Job!

3D printer day at Sirindhorn hospital
Dr. Nopparat of Udon Thani University arrived at Sirindhorn hospital, bringing with him a donation of a 3D printer.
Honoring the late King
The donation of a 3D printer to Sirindhorn Hospital by Dr. Nopparat was a great way to mark the one year anniversary of the passing of King Rama IX. Sirindhorn Hospital is on land given by the King and it is named for his daughter, Princess Sirindhorn. Thank you to the staff at Sirindhorn Hospital for all the hard work in setting up the first pilot project of Thai Reach and Thank you again Dr. Nopparat .
