Our first design
Our first design - a simple pen holder attachment for the E-Nable Phoenix hand and Team UnLimbited Arm.
We made this as a request from Mr. Wichit a man in Thailand who lost his arm below the elbow and for many years would strap a pen to his stump to write. Now as part of the Thai Reach / Sirindhorn Hospital Sai Jai Thai project to help Veterans with limb disabilities we are making him an Unlimbited Arm with the mod attached.
This very much a work in progress and we are planing to improve this so it has more functionality and more adjustable. This Wichit edition fits most pen sizes and works better on adult sized hands.
A 40 year wait to write
Mr. Wichit writes with the E-Nable Phoenix hand pen attachment with his Team UnLimbited arm. He told me he has been waiting 40 years to write with his right hand again.
Print one yourself and get writing.

Crazy Busy Week
Sirindhorn Hospital finished 6 Team UnLimbited arms in less than a week to meet a very tight deadline - next week 5 Vets will show up for fitting and training and the following week a big foundation will arrive to learn more about what we and E-Nable do and where do we want to go next. Everybody put in long hours to do this but we are happy to see the results of our new lab.
It’s got that new 3D printing lab smell
Nice Ride
This guy pulls up to Sirindhorn Hospital today in his custom motorcycle, no legs, one arm, asking about those 3D printed arms by Team UnLimbited we are making here. Of course we’re going to help him...but I kinda think this guy already has it figured out.

Showing off
Local dignitaries from the Ban Haad Sub-district, south of Khon Kaen met with the staff at Sirindhorn Hospital today to see the progress of the Thai Reach project, learn about 3D printing and meet Mr Cunmunt and his 3D printed hand. Mr. Cumnunt was the star, showing off how much progress he's made in the past two weeks wearing his hand. Mr. Cumnunt's dedication to mastering it has impressed everyone. After much insisting, we finally let him take it home for the first time. The dignitaries, that included a teacher, a military officer and government workers all came away impressed with what we have done so far and will spread the word and help with fundraising.

Learning to Reach
Mr Comnunt and his physical therapist, Kung are making progress with his new 3D printed hand.
A tour of the Veterans Hospital, Thailand
A couple of years ago when we were first pitching our Thai Reach project and looking for partners, Yui and I toured the Prosthetic and Orthotic facilities of Thailand's Veterans Hospital in Bangkok. We saw an exhibit showing the history of prosthetic design and we visited the workshops to see the then current process of making prothetics. I am always struck by the craftsmanship of molding and sculpting what will be a very personal object to someone. The doctors and staff we met were all quite blown away by our presentation showing what 3D printing can do, the Robohand, Project Daniel and E-nable, ect and were very eager to try something new. They also showed us a physical therapy ward where we met veterans making traditional Thai art, carvings and paintings. I left there with a different understanding of what it takes to make a prosthetic - it's not just science and engineering, it can be an art form as well as a means to create art. I knew that our project going forward would need to keep this in mind, never getting lost in the technology, always thinking of the creative potential of the people wearing what we create for them.
Printing an Unlimbited Arm for Tui
Ball Amornthep is printing an Unlimbited Arm for Tui. The Unlimbited Arm is designed with parts that are flat and then shaped with a jig after immersing in boiled water.
Measuring an Unlimbited Arm for Tui
After the success of Mr Jitt and Mr Comnunt, the staff at Sirindhorn hospital were inspired to help Tui out, who is missing a left hand and partial arm. The ideal design for him is the Unlimbited Arm. The staff measured his arms and made a mock up of the new arm using an adult Phoenix hand and a Thermoplastic cuff. More on the final design can be found here:
TEAM UNLIMBITED
Mr Comnunt gets a hand.
Mr Comnunt's physical therapist, Khun Kung of Sirindhorn Hospital had him training his wrists for the past two weeks in training for wearing the 3D printed Phoenix V2 hands. She told him to cut back a little since he was starting to develop wrist pain, he was training so hard. But it paid off as he had no problem picking up things on his first attempt.
